Moving out of your Boston apartment? Use this room-by-room checklist to maximize your security deposit return.
March 1, 2025
Boston landlords are notoriously strict about move-out cleanliness, and your security deposit is on the line. A thorough move-out clean can mean the difference between getting your full deposit back or losing hundreds of dollars to deductions.
Use this room-by-room checklist to make sure nothing gets missed.
Kitchen
The kitchen takes the most time but yields the biggest deposit savings.
- Clean inside and outside of all appliances (oven, fridge, microwave, dishwasher)
- Wipe down cabinets inside and out
- Scrub countertops, backsplash, and sink
- Degrease stovetop, hood, and range
- Sweep and mop floor, including under appliances
- Empty and clean all drawers
Bathrooms
Soap scum, mildew, and limescale are the top deduction triggers.
- Scrub tub, shower, and tile grout
- Disinfect toilet inside, outside, and base
- Clean mirrors and vanity
- Wipe cabinets and drawers
- Polish fixtures and remove water spots
- Mop floor and sanitize baseboards
Living areas and bedrooms
Don't forget the spaces that look fine but hide dust and dirt.
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vents
- Wipe baseboards, door frames, and switch plates
- Clean inside closets and shelves
- Vacuum carpets thoroughly (consider professional steam cleaning)
- Mop hardwood or tile floors
- Wash windows, sills, and tracks
Don't forget
Patch nail holes, replace burned-out bulbs, and remove all personal items including the basement, attic, or storage areas. Take photos after cleaning as proof of condition.
